ENGLISH: This year is a landmark for the Korean American Community of Anchorage, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a series of cultural and civic events designed to engage and enrich the city. Anchorage’s Korean community includes various associations such as the Senior Association, Sports Association, NEXGEN (youth and young adults), Cultural Association, a Korean Language School, and more. The Senior Association and NEXGEN are sub-associations directly connected to The Korean American Community of Anchorage.
A highlight on the community calendar is the upcoming annual Scholarship Day, where local businesses and organizations will come together to sponsor scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. These scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors to aid their transition to college. Notably, these scholarships are not limited to Korean students, reflecting the community’s inclusive philosophy.

The pinnacle of this year’s celebrations will be the Korea- Alaska Friendship Day Festival, scheduled for June 29th at The Dimond Center parking lot. This large-scale event promises an array of food vendors, vibrant performances, and a talent show with local artists competing for prizes. Adding to the excitement, the Chicago-based K-pop Dance Team PRISM KRU is set to deliver a headline performance. Additionally, the Senior Associa- tion actively engages local seniors through its Senior Academy, which offers opportunities to learn new skills and enjoy social events. Meanwhile, NEX- GEN has spearheaded initiatives to bolster Korean participation in local elections, with plans to expand their efforts to the up- coming Presidential elections, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement.

4월다양성의달을기념하여앵 커리지 전역의 학교들은 다문화 의밤개최를준비하고있으며,이 행사는 학생들과 지역사회내 다 채롭고 풍부한 문화의 모습을 선 보일 것입니다. 앵커리지 코리안 뉴스는베어밸리초등학교를방 문하여 다양한 문화 공유를 위해 비치된 테이블들을 둘러보았습니 다. 자원봉사자들은 한국 문화를 소개할 수 있는 공간을 마련하는 데많은노력을기울였습니다.베 어 밸리(곰의 계곡) 초등학교의 가 족과 친구들은 K-푸드 케이터링 에서 기증한 떡볶이와 서울 카사 가 기부한 김치볶음밥도 즐길 수 있었습니다. 러시아, 원주민, 일본, 필리핀, 라틴계 등의 다양한 문화 도 전시되었는데, 많은 참석자들 은 각 문화로부터의 다양한 공연 을 즐겼습니다.

학군 전역의 여러 학교에서 주최 된 이 이벤트들은 학생들과 그들 의가족들사이에대표되는문화 적배경,전통및언어의다양성을 강조하기 위한 것입니다. 전통 무 용과 음악 공연부터 미술 전시와 요리까지, 다문화의 밤은 모든 참 석자에게 생동감 있고 몰입감 넘 치는 경험을 제공합니다.

ENGLISH: This April, in celebration of Diversity Month, schools across Anchorage are gearing up to host Multicultural Nights, showcasing the rich tapestry of cultures within their student bodies and communities.

Anchorage Korean News visited Bear Valley Elementary School to explore the different tables set up to share many cultures. Volunteers put much effort into setting up an area to showcase Korean culture. Bear Valley Elementary’s family and friends could also enjoy ttukbokki, donated by K-Food Catering, and kimchi fried rice, donated by Seoul Casa.

Many other cultures were also showcased, including, but not limited to, Russian, indigenous, Japanese, Filipino, Latin, and many more. Attendees enjoyed many performances from each culture.

These events, organized by various schools throughout the district, aim to highlight the diversity of cultural backgrounds, traditions, and languages represented among students and their families. From traditional dances and musical performances to art exhibits and culinary delights, Multicultural Nights offers a vibrant and immersive experience for all attendees.

Some featured performances included Flow Zone Dance Studio, Latin Dance, Filipino dance by Bear Valley students and Fil-am dancers, Russian vocal performance, Sankofa dance, Polynesian dance, Irish Dance Academy, and Tomodachi Daiko Taiko Drummers.

As Anchorage continues to embrace its multicultural heritage, events like Multicultural Nights play a vital role in fostering understanding, appreciation, and unity among its diverse population. These celebrations showcase the vibrant mosaic of cultures within the city and reinforce- anchorage’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural exchange. According to asdk12.org, The Anchorage School District has a Multicultural Education Concerns Advisory Committee (ME- CAC), which ensures equity for all students by providing input directly to the Superintendent on relevant issues that impact student achievement. This committee works to involve parents, manage community relations, curriculum adoption and implementation, cultural competence, and equity/inclusion instructional concerns.

ENGLISH: The March 1st Movement, also known as Samil Jeol, remains a defining moment in Korea’s protracted struggle for freedom and independence from Imperial Japan. This year, the nation commemorates the significant event that took place over
a century ago marked a pivotal point in Korea’s history and its enduring fight against Japanese colonial rule.
On March 1, 1919, inspired by the principles of peace and self-determination proclaimed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, thousands of Koreans from various walks of life congregated to assert their right to sovereignty. In a demonstration, they read
aloud the Korean Declaration of Independence, secretly prepared by 33 cultural and religious leaders. The protest took place in Seoul and quickly spread to other parts of the country, drawing widespread participation.
These were brutally suppressed, with Korean historian Park Eun-sik reporting about 7,500 killed and 16,000 wounded, and 46,000 arrested.
Korea eventually achieved independence decades later after the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. March 1st is celebrated as a national holiday
in South Korea, but not in North Korea.
On March 1st, 2024, an event was held at The Korean American Community of Anchorage to commemorate this day.
Speakers from the Korean American Community of Anchorage, the Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Anchorage, and the Korean Senior Association spoke about the importance of remembering this day.
After the event, everyone enjoyed a nice catered meal featuring popular Korean dishes like bulgogi, japchae, and much more!
