SEOUL, South Korea — Legendary K-pop group BIGBANG is returning to the United States for its first North American tour in more than a decade, marking a major milestone in the group’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

YG Entertainment announced that BIGBANG’s 2026 World Tour will include two U.S. stadium performances. The group is scheduled to perform at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California, on Sept. 5, followed by a concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sept. 11. The tour will continue through Europe, Asia, and Australia as part of a 31-show global itinerary.

The current lineup features G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung. The tour marks the trio’s first world tour together since 2017 and follows years in which the members focused on solo careers and completed South Korea’s mandatory military service.

The 2026 tour coincides with BIGBANG’s 20th anniversary since debuting under YG Entertainment in 2006. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern K-pop, the group helped introduce Korean popular music to global audiences through hit songs such as “Fantastic Baby,” “Bang Bang Bang,” “Haru Haru,” and “Lies.” Their influence has extended beyond music into fashion, entertainment, and popular culture.

Interest in the reunion has grown following BIGBANG’s appearance at the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where the group performed together before officially announcing the world tour. Governor Mike Dunleavy today applauded the Alaska House of Representatives for passing legislation (HB 381) establishing a volumetric tax structure for the proposed Alaska LNG Project, calling the vote a significant step toward advancing one of the largest economic development opportunities in Alaska’s history.

The legislation replaces the traditional property tax system with a predictable, volume-based tax framework for natural gas transported through the Alaska LNG pipeline, helping strengthen the project’s competitiveness while providing long-term certainty for communities, investors and project partners.

“This is an important victory for Alaska’s future,” said Governor Mike Dunleavy. “I want to thank the members of the House who recognized the importance of creating a stable, competitive fiscal framework that will help move the Alaska LNG Project closer to reality. This legislation sends a strong message that Alaska is serious about developing our vast natural gas resources and delivering affordable energy, good-paying jobs, and long-term economic opportunity for generations of Alaskans.”

The Governor noted that the Alaska LNG Project has the potential to unlock North Slope natural gas that has remained stranded for decades while creating thousands of construction jobs, supporting Alaska businesses, generating billions in private investment, expanding energy security for Alaska communities, and providing reliable supplies of liquefied natural gas to markets in Asia and beyond.

Governor Dunleavy also thanks Glenfarne, industry stakeholders, city and borough leaders, labor organizations, and Alaskans who supported the measure throughout the legislative process.

The bill now advances to the Alaska Senate for consideration. Governor Dunleavy encourages senators to build on the momentum by approving the legislation and sending it to his desk for signature.

In 2026, South Korea’s economy is experiencing both recovery and uncertainty. Strong exports and rising investment, driven by the semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) industries, have led economists to raise the country’s growth outlook. The OECD now projects South Korea’s economy to grow by 2.6% this year, placing it among the stronger-performing advanced economies.   

Despite this positive outlook, inflation remains a significant challenge. Higher global oil prices, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and rising energy costs have increased pressure on household budgets. Consumer inflation has recently exceeded 3 percent, prompting the government and the Bank of Korea to focus on maintaining price stability while supporting economic growth. Balancing monetary policy with measures that ease the burden on ordinary families will remain a critical policy objective.   

South Korea’s greatest strengths lie in its globally competitive manufacturing sector, world-leading semiconductor industry, and expanding AI ecosystem. At the same time, rising housing prices, increasing household debt, a low birth rate, and rapid population aging remain structural challenges that require long-term solutions. Sustainable growth will depend not only on short-term stimulus but also on innovation, productivity gains, and creating quality jobs for the next generation. 

Economic success is measured not only by statistics but also by the quality of people’s daily lives. When families can afford essential goods, young people can pursue meaningful careers, and businesses have the confidence to invest, the economy truly prospers. By responding wisely to inflation while strengthening long-term competitiveness, South Korea can transform today’s challenges into tomorrow’s opportunities.

2026년 한국경제는 회복과 불안이 공존하는 국면에 들어서 있다. 반도체와 인공지능(AI) 산업의 호황에 힘입어 수출과 기업 투자가 살아나면서 경제성장률 전망은 상향 조정되었다. 최근 OECD는 한국의 올해 경제성장률을 2.6%로 전망하며 주요 선진국 가운데 비교적 견조한 성장세를 예상했다.

그러나 성장의 이면에는 인플레이션이라는 또 다른 과제가 놓여 있다. 국제 유가와 중동 정세의 불안, 에너지 가격 상승, 생활물가 부담은 소비자들의 체감경기를 압박하고 있다. 최근 소비자물가 상승률은 3%를 웃돌며 정부와 한국은행은 물가 안정을 최우선 과제로 삼고 있다. 금리와 재정정책의 균형을 유지하면서도 서민들의 생활비 부담을 줄이는 정책이 더욱 중요해지고 있다.

한국경제의 강점은 세계 최고 수준의 제조업 경쟁력과 반도체 산업, 그리고 빠르게 성장하는 AI 산업에 있다. 하지만 부동산 가격 상승, 가계부채 증가, 저출산과 고령화는 장기적으로 해결해야 할 구조적 과제이다. 단기적인 경기부양보다 생산성 향상과 기술혁신, 청년 일자리 확대를 통해 경제의 체질을 강화하는 것이 지속 가능한 성장의 열쇠가 될 것이다.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Korea-Alaska Friendship Festival brought together community members, local leaders, cultural performers, and families at the Dimond Center parking lot on Saturday, June 28, for a day celebrating friendship, culture, and unity between Korea and Alaska.

A highlight of the opening ceremony was the reading of the official Korea-Alaska Friendship Day proclamation, signed by Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy. The proclamation recognized the contributions of Alaska’s Korean community and honored the cultural, economic, and community ties that continue to strengthen the relationship between Korea and Alaska.

The event opened with a performance by the Eung Hwa Kim Dance Company, followed by an opening prayer, the singing of the national anthems, and the Alaska Flag Song. The official proclamation was read by John Crowther, Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.

The festival welcomed remarks from the Korean American Community of Anchorage President, the Head of the Korean Consular Office, Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance, Alaska State Senator Forrest Dunbar, and Aves Thompson, President of the Korean War Veterans Association.

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed a diverse lineup of cultural performances representing Korean, Alaska Native, Filipino, Hawaiian, African, martial arts, and wellness traditions. Performers included the Eung Hwa Kim Dance Company, CHAMP Martial Arts, Hiʻilei Aloha Dance Company, Alaska Federation of Filipino Americans, Upallret Traditional Yup’ik Dance Group, Oni ILu Drum Corps, and Tai Chi for Health Alaska.

The program also included an introduction of the organizing committee and a grand prize raffle drawing sponsored by Alaska Airlines.

Organizers said the festival was an opportunity to strengthen relationships among Alaska’s Korean community, local cultural organizations, public officials, and the broader Anchorage community. The event concluded with a closing performance by the Eung Hwa Kim Dance Company, bringing the celebration to a meaningful close.

MONTERREY, Mexico — South Africa secured its first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout stage berth with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in the final Group A match on Wednesday, June 24, at Monterrey Stadium.

The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko finished a cross from substitute Tshepang Moremi, scoring the only goal of the match. Moremi had entered the game just one minute earlier, giving South Africa an immediate attacking spark on the counterattack.

South Korea controlled much of the possession but struggled to create clear scoring chances against South Africa’s organized defensive shape. Head coach Hong Myung-bo made a major tactical decision by leaving captain Son Heung-min out of the starting lineup, reportedly hoping to use him more effectively later in the match. Son was introduced at halftime as part of a series of attacking changes, but South Korea still failed to break through.

Hong also made multiple halftime substitutions, bringing on Son, Kim Jin-gyu and Jens Castrop in an attempt to add creativity and urgency. After falling behind, South Korea pushed more players forward and later introduced striker Cho Gue-sung, but the team’s attack remained unable to convert possession into an equalizer.

South Africa, meanwhile, adjusted its approach by staying compact defensively and looking for fast breaks. Head coach Hugo Broos praised his players’ tactical discipline after the match, saying the team executed its plan well. South Africa’s substitution of Moremi proved decisive, as he assisted Maseko’s winning goal almost immediately after entering the field.

The victory lifted South Africa to second place in Group A with four points, behind group winner Mexico, which finished with nine points after defeating Czechia 3-0. South Korea finished third with three points, while Czechia ended fourth with one point.

BOISE, Idaho — Alaska Rush captured the 2026 US Youth Soccer Northwest Presidents Cup National Qualifier championship after an unforgettable comeback victory, earning a spot in the 2026 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup in Wichita, Kansas, this July.

One of the biggest heroes of the championship match was Jacob Lee (#13), a Korean American student at Romig Middle School in Anchorage. With Alaska Rush trailing 1-0 late in the final, Lee scored the crucial equalizing goal to keep his team’s championship hopes alive.

The dramatic goal forced the match into a penalty shootout, where Alaska Rush held its composure and emerged victorious to claim the regional title.

The Northwest Presidents Cup National Qualifier, held in Boise, Idaho, featured boys’ and girls’ teams in the 13U through 19U age groups from across the region. Under tournament rules, only the champion in each age division advances to the US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup, making every championship match a winner-take-all contest.

Alaska Rush will now travel to Wichita, Kansas, where the team will compete in the 2026 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup, scheduled for July 7–11. The tournament brings together regional champions from across the United States to compete for a national championship.

Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance announced the recipients of the 2026 Mayor’s Arts and Community Grants, as well as the second round of the “Beyond the Beige” grant initiative.

These programs provide essential financial support to local nonprofits and cultural organizations fostering a more vibrant, connected, and resilient Anchorage.

“I am proud to support our local nonprofits and cultural organizations as they work to strengthen our community,” said Mayor LaFrance. “Investing in their work is a direct investment in a safer, more vibrant community for everyone who calls Anchorage home.”

Expanding access to the arts

For the 2026 Arts Grants, the Mayor prioritized projects that expand public access to arts and culture, specifically those offering free or low-cost programming. This year, 17 organizations were selected to receive funding. Examples of projects include:

Anchorage Folk Festival: Increasing capacity for free and low-cost workshops and performances.

Alaska Theatre of Youth: Providing free tickets to school performances for students, teachers, and chaperones.

Alaska Chinese Association: Upgrading costumes and equipment used for free public performances.

Supporting community programs: The Community Grants focus on organizations with projects that directly support the Mayor’s policy priorities: public safety, housing, and community building. From the pool of applicants, 51 organizations were selected. Highlighted recipients include:

The Dome: Supporting the Community Health Initiative.

Rocket Fuel: Providing 3,900 weekend meal bags for food-insecure students.

Anchorage Project Access: Expanding the “Lifeline to Health” program to connect homeless families with critical health services.

Data for Indigenous Justice: Hosting community healing events and cultural gatherings.

Revitalizing public spaces with Beyond the Beige

Now in its second year, Beyond the Beige—a partnership between the Municipality and the Anchorage Community Development Authority (ACDA)—will award a total of $100,000 among five community-driven projects aimed at bringing vibrant, engaging public art and color to Anchorage.

Selected projects span the Municipality from downtown to Spenard and Girdwood. This year’s installations will transform everyday vehicles into sculptural art, feature large-scale murals celebrating Alaska heritage, and revitalize local infrastructure with bold, bright designs.

“Great public spaces help create great communities,” said ACDA Executive Director Mike Robbins. “Beyond the 

Beige is a powerful example of how strategic partnerships can support local artists, energize neighborhoods, and make Anchorage a more vibrant place to live, work, and visit. ACDA is proud to partner with the Municipality on an initiative that brings creativity, community pride, and investment into public spaces across the Municipality of Anchorage.”

2년째를 맞은 비욘드 더 베이지 프로젝트는 앵커리지 시정부와 앵커리지 지역개발청(ACDA)이 공동 추진하는 사업으로, 총 10만 달러를 지원해 5개의 지역 주도 공공예술 프로젝트를 진행한다.

선정된 프로젝트는 다운타운, 스페나드, 거드우드 등 앵커리지 전역에서 추진되며, 일반 차량을 예술 작품으로 탈바꿈시키고, 알래스카의 유산을 담은 대형 벽화를 제작하며, 도시 기반시설을 밝고 대담한 디자인으로 새롭게 꾸밀 예정이다.

마이크 로빈스 ACDA 사무총장은 “훌륭한 공공공간은 훌륭한 공동체를 만든다”며 “이번 사업은 지역 예술가를 지원하고 지역사회에 활력을 불어넣는 성공적인 협력 사례가 될 것”이라고 말했다.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — NEXGEN, the youth and young adult group of the Korean American Community of Anchorage (KACA), hosted a community social gathering on Friday, May 29, at Sakana Poke & Soirée in Anchorage.

The event brought together young adults from across the community for an evening of networking, cultural activities, food, and civic engagement. The social was designed to strengthen connections among young Korean Americans while encouraging greater involvement in civic engagement. Attendees enjoyed a welcoming atmosphere featuring Korean games, food, music, and opportunities to meet other young professionals and students from across Anchorage.

The evening featured presentations from several community leaders and emerging voices. Lia Vasquez, a member of the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Korean Student Association (KOSA), spoke about the importance of creating spaces where young Korean Americans can build friendships, celebrate their heritage, and become more involved in community leadership.

Arianna Bellizzi of the Federation of Community Councils introduced attendees to Anchorage’s community council system and discussed ways residents can become more engaged in local decision-making. Her presentation highlighted how community councils serve as an important bridge between residents and local government, giving individuals a voice on issues that affect their neighborhoods. Emily Cho of NEXGEN spoke about the organization’s mission to support and empower the next generation of Korean-American leaders in Alaska. She encouraged attendees to continue building connections within the com community while seeking opportunities to serve and lead.

In addition to the presentations, organizers used the event as an opportunity to raise awareness about Alaska’s upcoming 2026 primary elections. Information was shared about voter participation and election dates, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement among younger generations and immigrant communities.

Participants also took part in a Korean trivia competition that tested their knowledge of Korean culture, history, traditions, and modern Korean society. The activity sparked friendly competition and laughter while helping attendees learn more about their cultural heritage.

The event reflected NEXGEN’s ongoing commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for young adults to connect through culture, community, and civic participation. By blending traditional Korean activities with discussions about leadership and local engagement, organizers hope to inspire more young Korean Americans to become active contributors to both the Korean- American community and the broader Anchorage community.

As NEXGEN continues to grow, events like the Community Social demonstrate the organization’s vision of building a stronger, more connected generation of leaders who are proud of their heritage and engaged in shaping the future of Alaska.

알래스카 앵커리지 – 한인회(KACA) 산하 청소년 및 청년 단체인 넥스젠 (NEXGEN)이 지난 5월 29일 금요일, 앵 커리지에 위치한 사카나 포케 앤 소이레 (Sakana Poke & Soirée)에서 커뮤니티 소셜 행사를 개최했다. 이번 행사는 네 트워킹, 문화 활동, 음식, 그리고 시민 참 여를 주제로 지역의 청년 및 청소년들이 한자리에 모이는 뜻깊은 시간이 되었다.

이번 소셜 행사는 한인 청년들 간의 유 대감을 강화하고 시민 참여(Civic Engagement) 에 대한 관심을 높이기 위해 마련되었다. 참석자들은 한국 전통 놀 이, 음식, 음악을 즐기며 앵커리지 지역 의 다양한 학생들과 젊은 전문직 종사 자들을 만나 교류할 수 있는 시간을 가 졌다.

이날 행사에서는 지역사회 리더들과 차 세대 리더들의 발표도 진행되었다. 알 래스카대학교 앵커리지(University of Alaska Anchorage) 한국학생회(KOSA) 소속의 리아 바스케즈(Lia Vasquez)는 한인 청년들이 서로 우정을 쌓고, 자신 의 문화적 정체성을 기념하며, 지역사회 리더십에 더욱 적극적으로 참여할 수 있 는 공간의 중요성에 대해 이야기했다. 연방 커뮤니티 카운슬(Federation of Community Councils)의 아리아나 벨리 치(Arianna Bellizzi)는 앵커리지의 커뮤니 티 카운슬 제도를 소개하며 주민들이 지 역 의사결정 과정에 참여할 수 있는 방 법을 설명했다. 그녀는 커뮤니티 카운슬 이 주민들과 지방정부를 연결하는 중요 한 가교 역할을 하며, 주민들이 자신이 속한 지역사회 문제에 목소리를 낼 수 있도록 돕는다고 강조했다.

발표와 함께 행사 주최 측은 다가오 는 2026년 알래스카 예비선거(Primary Election)에 대한 인식 제고 활동도 진행 했다. 참석자들에게 투표 참여의 중요성 과 주요 선거 일정을 소개하며, 특히 젊 은 세대와 이민자 커뮤니티의 적극적인 시민 참여가 필요하다는 점을 강조했다. 참석자들은 한국 문화와 역사, 전통, 그 리고 현대 한국 사회에 대한 지식을 겨 루는 한국 퀴즈 게임에도 참여했다. 참 가자들은 즐거운 경쟁과 웃음 속에서 한 국 문화에 대해 더 깊이 배우는 시간을 가졌다.

A new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Nutrients found that older adults who consume too little protein may face a significantly higher risk of muscle weakness and difficulty performing everyday activities. Researchers led by Professor Rizwan Qaiser of the University of Sharjah analyzed health data from 38,073 adults aged 50 and older across 27 European countries through the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Participants with the lowest levels of protein intake—based on consumption of dairy products, eggs, legumes, meat, fish, and poultry—were classified as the low-protein group.

The study found that men with low protein intake had a 35% to 39% higher risk of reduced handgrip strength, a widely used measure of overall muscle health. Women aged 66 and older had a 21% higher risk of grip strength decline.

Low-protein participants were also 25% to 53% more likely to experience difficulty walking 100 meters and up to 33% more likely to struggle with lifting their arms overhead. Women with low protein intake had a 65% greater risk of difficulty carrying out shopping tasks, while women aged 50–65 were more than twice as likely to experience difficulty using the bathroom independently. Researchers noted that inadequate protein intake can disrupt the body’s ability to maintain muscle mass, increasing the risk of sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), physical decline, falls, hospitalization, and loss of independence.

“Even simple activities such as walking, standing up, and carrying groceries require muscle strength, balance, and coordination,” Qaiser said. “Long-term protein deficiency can make it harder to maintain these abilities and increase the risk of functional decline.”

국제 학술지 *뉴트리언츠(Nutrients)* 에 게재된 이번 연구는 아랍에미리트 (UAE) 샤르자대학교 리즈완 카이사르 (Rizwan Qaiser) 교수가 이끄는 연구 진이 수행했다. 연구진은 유럽 27개 국의 50세 이상 성인 3만8,073명을 대상으로 한 유럽 건강·고령화·은 퇴 조사(SHARE) 데이터를 분석해 단 백질 섭취와 신체 기능의 관계를 살 펴봤다.

연구진은 유제품, 달걀, 콩류, 육류, 생 선, 가금류 등의 섭취 빈도를 기준으 로 단백질 섭취 수준을 평가했으며, 가장 적게 섭취한 참가자들을 ‘저단 백 섭취군’으로 분류했다.

분석 결과, 단백질 섭취가 부족한 남 성은 악력(손아귀 힘) 저하 위험이 35~39% 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 악력은 전반적인 근육 건강을 평가하 는 대표적인 지표로 사용된다. 또한 66세 이상 여성의 경우 악력 저하 위 험이 21% 더 높았다.

저단백 섭취군은 100미터 걷기에 어 려움을 겪을 가능성이 25~53% 높았 으며, 머리 위로 팔을 올리는 동작에 어려움을 겪을 위험도 최대 33% 높 은 것으로 조사됐다. 특히 단백질 섭 취가 부족한 여성은 장보기에 어려움 을 겪을 위험이 65% 높았고, 50~65 세 여성은 화장실을 독립적으로 이용 하는 데 어려움을 겪을 가능성이 단 백질을 충분히 섭취한 여성보다 두 배 이상 높았다.

연구진은 단백질 부족이 근육량 유지 능력을 약화시켜 근감소증(노화에 따 른 근육 감소), 신체 기능 저하, 낙상, 입원, 그리고 독립적인 생활 능력 상 실 위험을 높일 수 있다고 설명했다. 카이사르 교수는 “걷기, 일어서기, 장바구니를 드는 것과 같은 단순한 활동도 근력과 균형감각, 협응 능력이 필요하다”며 “장기간 단백질이 부 족하면 이러한 능력을 유지하기 어려 워져 신체 기능 저하 위험이 증가할 수 있다”고 말했다.

이번 연구는 고령층이 충분한 단백질 을 섭취하는 것이 근육 건강과 독립 적인 생활 유지에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있음을 보여준다.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Pikka oil development on Alaska’s North Slope has emerged as one of the largest private investments in Alaska in recent years, marking a significant milestone for the state’s energy industry and economic future.

Operated by Australian energy company Santos in partnership with Spanish energy company Repsol, the Pikka project is located within the Nanushuk formation on Alaska’s North Slope. The project received its final investment decision in 2022, with an initial investment of approximately $2.6 billion for Phase 1 development.

After several years of construction, Santos announced in May 2026 that the project had achieved its first oil production, a major milestone for Alaska’s petroleum industry. The company expects Pikka to reach a production plateau of approximately 80,000 barrels of oil per day during the third quarter of 2026.

Energy analysts have described Pikka as one of the most significant oil developments on the North Slope in decades. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the project is expected to play a major role in increasing Alaska’s oil production after years of decline. The EIA forecasts Alaska crude oil production will experience its largest annual increase since the 1980s, driven largely by new developments such as Pikka. The project’s economic impact extends beyond oil production. State officials estimate that the development created approximately 2,600 construction jobs and is expected to support roughly 500 long-term operational jobs once full production is achieved.

Industry observers believe the success of Pikka is helping attract additional investment to Alaska’s North Slope. Recent lease sales have drawn renewed interest from major energy companies, including ExxonMobil and Shell, which have returned to explore opportunities in the region. Analysts point to the multibillion-dollar investments in both the Pikka and Willow developments as evidence of renewed confidence in Alaska’s oil resources.

The Pikka field contains an estimated 768 million barrels of recoverable oil and is considered one of the largest oil discoveries in the United States in recent decades. Its development comes at a time when Alaska’s oil production has fallen significantly from its historic peak of more than 2 million barrels per day in the late 1980s to fewer than 500,000 barrels per day in recent years.

Supporters argue that projects such as Pikka are essential for maintaining throughput in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), generating state revenue, and supporting employment across Alaska. Increased oil production is also expected to provide additional tax and royalty revenue for state and local governments.

However, the project has also drawn criticism from environmental organizations concerned about the long-term effects of continued oil development in Arctic regions. These groups argue that large-scale fossil fuel projects may conflict with efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change. Similar concerns have been raised regarding other North Slope developments, including the Willow project.

Despite ongoing debate, the Pikka project represents a major turning point for Alaska’s energy sector. With production now underway and additional North Slope developments planned, industry experts believe Alaska may be entering a new era of oil production growth. Some forecasts suggest statewide production could approach 750,000 barrels per day by 2030 if projects currently under development are completed as planned.
