필라델피아를 기반으로 활동하며 Apple, National Geographic, The New York Times, NPR, TIME 등 세계적인 매체와 협업해온 한나 윤(Hannah Yoon) 사진 작가가 최근 앵커리지를 방문해 커뮤니 티, 정체성, 그리고 사진 속에서의 대표 성(Representation)을 주제로 한 일련의 강연을 진행했다. 윤 작가는 저널리즘과 스토리텔링에 대한 열정을 알래스카의 창작 및 언론 커뮤니티와 공유하며 깊은 인상을 남겼다.

4월 9일 저녁, 윤 작가는 앵커리지 301 E Fireweed Lane에 위치한 한인 운영 스튜디오 The Stoop에서 아티스트 토크 를 진행했다. 이날 강연에서 그녀는 사 진작업에 대한 철학과 작업에 담긴 깊 은 이야기들을 나눴으며, 특히 디아스포 라와 미국 내 이민자들의 삶을 중심 주 제로 한 작품들을 소개했다. 그녀의 대 표작에는 이민자 가정의 중국 음식점에 서 자라나는 아이들의 모습을 담은 인 물 사진 시리즈, 전 세계 BTS 팬 문화를 TIME 매거진에 담은 포토 에세이, 그리 고 한국 노년층의 패션을 기록한 시리즈 등이 있다.

윤 작가는 또한 2021년 애틀랜타 스파 총격 사건 이후 현장을 담은 사진 작업 으로도 주목받았다. 당시 8명이 희생되 었고 그중 4명이 한국계였다. 윤 작가의 사진은 《워싱턴 포스트》를 통해 보도 되었으며, 미국 내 한인 커뮤니티의 슬 픔과 회복력을 강하게 드러냈다.

공개 강연 이후, 윤 작가는 4월 11일 과 12일 양일에 걸쳐 **알래스카 대학 교 앵커리지 캠퍼스(University of Alaska Anchorage)**에서 열린 **알래스카 프 레스 클럽 컨퍼런스(Alaska Press Club Conference)**에서도 두 차례 추가 강연 을 진행했다. ‘커뮤니티 만들기(Creating Community)’와 ‘대표성의 중요성(Why Representation Matters)’이라는 주제의 강연에서, 그녀는 프리랜서 사진가로서 관계 형성의 중요성과 소외된 커뮤니티 의 가시성 확보가 갖는 의미에 대해 심 도 깊은 통찰을 나누었다. 또한 한인 디 아스포라 출신의 한국계 캐나다인으로 서 사진 저널리즘 업계에서의 여정과 그 과정이 어떻게 그녀의 사명을 형성했는 지에 대해 진솔하게 공유했다.

이번 강연 시리즈는 알래스카처럼 이러 한 기회가 드문 지역에서 더욱 특별한 의미를 느끼게한다. 특히 알래스카에 거 주하는 한인들과 사진에 관심 있는 지역 커뮤니티 모두에게 영감과 지식을 나눌 수 있는 소중한 기회로, 지역 사회에 깊 은 울림을 주는 뜻깊은 행사였다.

Acclaimed Korean photographer Hannah Yoon, based in Philadelphia, recently visited Anchorage to host a series of lectures focused on community, identity, and representation in photography. Known for her work with Apple, National Geographic, The New York Times, NPR, and TIME, Yoon brought her expertise and passion for storytelling to Alaska’s creative and journalistic communities.

On the evening of April 9th, Yoon gave an artist talk at The Stoop, A Korean-owned studio located at 301 E Fireweed Lane in Anchorage. During the lecture, she shared her approach to photography and the deeper stories behind her work, many of which center on themes of diaspora and immigrant life in America. Her projects have included intimate portraits of children growing up in immigrant-owned Chinese restaurants, a TIME magazine photo essay capturing global BTS fandom, and a series on the fashion of Korean seniors.

Yoon’s work also includes powerful images from the aftermath of the 2021 Atlanta spa shootings, where eight people were murdered—four of them of Korean descent. Her coverage was featured in The Washington Post, capturing the grief and resilience of the Korean American community.

Following her public talk, Yoon delivered two additional lectures at the Alaska Press Club Conference at the University of Alaska Anchorage on April 11th and 12th. Her presentations, titled Creating Community and Why Representation Matters, explored the importance of building relationships in freelance photography and the significance of visibility for underrepresented communities. She also reflected on her journey as a Korean Canadian navigating the photojournalism world and how it shaped her mission to amplify stories within the Korean diaspora and beyond.

Events like this are especially meaningful in Alaska, where opportunities like this are rare. It provided a valuable chance for Koreans in Alaska, along with the greater photography community, to gain both inspiration and knowledge, making it a truly special and impactful event for the community.
