Over 100 homes sustained damage in this week’s flooding, underscoring the recurring nature of this problem for residents of Alaska’s capital. The event has intensified discussions around the urgent need for more robust climate adaptation strategies to protect vulnerable communities in the region.

The City and Borough of Juneau is also partnering with United Way to deploy additional volunteer clean-up crews. Their volunteer center at Melvin Park in the Mendenhall Valley opened up on Thursday. The volunteer center will be open Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

To assist with the flood damage in the Juneau area, the Korean American Community of Anchorage is raising funds. We would appreciate it if everyone in the Korean community could join in this good cause to help the local community. Donations from individuals and organizations are welcome, and even a small contribution can make a big difference when we come together.

For inquiries about donations, please contact the Anchorage Korean American Community of Anchorage at 907- 561-5345 or admin@koreanak.com.

River in northern Juneau, Alaska, surpassed significant flood stage, leading to widespread flooding that submerged streets, inundated homes, and forced residents to evacuate. This devastating event was triggered by a glacial outburst—a phenomenon where water, previously dammed by a glacier, is suddenly released downstream. This outburst occurred nearly one year after a similar event in 2023, which experts have linked to the accelerating impacts of climate change.

Preliminary estimates suggest that approximately 14.6 billion gallons of water were released from the Suicide Basin, according to Aaron Jacobs, Senior Service Hydrologist at the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Juneau. To put this into perspective, that volume is equivalent to more than 22,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Officials anticipate more accurate measurements once they complete their analysis of drone surveys conducted in the affected areas.

While mitigation efforts, such as river-bank stabilization, were implemented following last year’s flood, they proved insufficient against the sheer volume of water this year. The overwhelming flow breached riverbanks, flooding even more homes and neighborhoods in Juneau.
