자매도시 국제 협회(Sister Cities International)는 1956년 드와이트 D. 아이젠하 워(Dwight D. Eisenhower) 미국 대통령 이 백악관 회의에서 제안한 피플-투-피 플(People-to-People) 개념에서 비롯되 었다.

앵커리지 자매도시 위원회(Anchorage Sister Cities Commission)는 1970년에 설 립되었으며, 1972년에 공식적인 위원회 로 승격되었다. 이 위원회의 설립은 앵 커리지와 해외 도시 간의 문화, 스포츠 및 교육 교류 프로그램의 중요성을 공식 적으로 인정한 것으로, 상호 존중과 우 호 증진을 위한 수단으로 자리 잡았다. 자매도시 위원회는 시장이 임명한 앵커 리지 시민들로 구성된다. 위원들은 정 부, 상업, 교육 등 다양한 분야의 대표자 들로 이루어져 있으며, 여러 민족 공동 체를 대표하는 인사들도 포함된다. 이들 은 자원봉사자로 활동하며, 앵커리지를 방문하는 자매도시 시민들과 귀빈들을 맞이하는 행사도 주관한다. 위원회 회의 는 매월 개최되며, 일반 시민들도 참석 할 수 있다.

앵커리지는 다음 여섯 개의 도시와 자매 도시 관계를 맺고 있다.

에밀리 조, 자매도시 위원회 위원장으 로 선출

최근 에밀리 조(Emily Cho)가 앵커리지 자매도시 위원회의 위원장으로 선출되 었다. 위원장은 자매도시 위원회의 운영 을 이끌며, 위원회가 활발하게 활동하고 그 목표에 부합하도록 비전을 제시하는 역할을 맡는다.

에밀리 조는 2023년 앵커리지 자매도시 위원회에 임명되었으며, 대한민국 인천 을 대표하고 있다.

그녀는 2017년 8월 라스무슨 재단 (Rasmuson Foundation)에서 커뮤니케 이션 인턴으로 경력을 시작했으며, 같은 해 11월 정규직으로 전환되어 현재 커 뮤니케이션 담당자로 근무하고 있다.

앵커리지에서 태어나고 자란 에밀리 조 는 지역사회 활동에 적극적으로 참여하 고 있다. 그녀는 앵커리지 한인회 차세 대 그룹(NexGen)의 핵심 멤버로 활동하 며, 다양한 행사에서 자원봉사를 하고 한인 청년 세대와 기성 세대를 연결하는 데 힘쓰고 있다. 그녀는 2023년 6월 앵 커리지 자매도시 위원회에 임명되었으 며, 2025년 위원장으로 선출되었다. 또 한 2023년에는 앵커리지 상공회의소 청 년 전문인 그룹(Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Group) 에서 ‘올해의 젊은 전문가(Young Professional of the Year)’로 선정되었다.

에밀리 조는 지역사회를 돕고, 청년들을 격려하며, 자신의 문화와의 연결을 유지 하는 것에 열정을 가지고 있다. 그녀는 남편 폴(Paul)과 함께 앵커리지에 거주 하고 있다.

Sister Cities International grew out of the People-to-People concept proposed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower at a 1956 White House conference.

The Anchorage Sister Cities Commission was established in 1970 and became a full Commission in 1972. Its formation formally recognized the importance of cultural, sporting, and educational exchange programs between Anchorage and other foreign cities as a means to foster mutual respect and goodwill.

The Commission Sister Cities is composed of Anchorage citizens appointed by the Mayor. Commissioners come from diverse groups within the community, including government, commerce, and education, as well as representatives of various ethnic communities. The members volunteer their time and efforts. The Sister Cities Commission also assists in hosting functions on behalf of Anchorage for visiting citizens and dignitaries from its sister cities. Commission meetings are held monthly and are open to the public.

The sister cities are Darwin, Australia; Chitose, Japan; Whitby, England; Harbin, China; Incheon, Korea; and Tromso, Norway.

Emily Cho was recently elected as the chair of The Sister Cities Commission. The chair of a sister cities commission provides leadership and vision for the committee, ensuring that it remains active and aligns with the Commission’s mission.

Emily Cho was appointed to the Anchorage Sister City Commission in 2023. She represents Incheon, South Korea.

Emily Cho joined Rasmuson Foundation in August 2017 as a communications intern. She transitioned to a full-time position in November 2017 and currently serves as Communications Associate.

Born and raised in Anchorage, she strives to be an active part of her community. Emily is an executive member of the Korean American Community of Anchorage’s NexGen group, where she volunteers her time at various events and helps connect the younger generation of Korean Americans with the older generation. She was appointed to the Anchorage Sister Cities Commission in June 2023 and was elected as chair of the commission in 2025. Also in 2023, Emily was named Young Professional of the Year by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Group.
